The Water Cycle
We frequent the space that lies between us.
In this space, I am content squeezing my legs together to
remind myself that my ovaries are still there
That the people on TV are still not eating
That I am getting older and angrier and the days
longer. In the heat I dream her up
Mourning the loss of someone who never existed
I dream she has my thighs but prefers to hide behind yours
When I reach out for you both, you are a fever
And like a marathon, like salt collecting on a shore, like the synodic month
I am running
The summer is a beast and I love you like the sun
and the moon is just a phase always giving into itself, into the waves
into the condensation building on our chests
